Flavours of the West - 2nd & 3rd July 2011

Save the date, 2nd and 3rd July 2011 for Flavours of the West at Milsom Place in Bath This friendly foodie gathering has the atmosphere of an artisan farmer’s market with demonstrations by A-list chefs in the Octagon, formerly a Georgian chapel.

Local celebrity baker, and Food Champion of the BBC Food & Farming Awards 2010 Richard Bertinet will be taking centre stage.  The line up for the Aga Range Master Cookery Theatre also includes Daily Telegraph Cookery Writer, Xanthe Clay and Rachel Demuth whose restaurant was named Best Vegetarian Restaurant in 2010 by Gourmet Britain and who, like Richard Bertinet, runs a cookery school in Bath.

West Country suppliers will be on hand for tastings and tutorials.  The stalls include a good range of beers and ciders with Bath Ales, Bridge Farm Cider and Red Rock Brewery as well as wines from the Field Wine Bar, Quoins and Avalon Vineyards.  Cotswold Country Liqueurs will be sampling their knock out digestifs flavoured with fruits and flowers.

Golden Cenarth, Winner of the 2010 Supreme Champion at the British Cheese Awards, the Oscar Winner of all cheeses will be on sale at the Caws Cenarth stand 

Prizewinning preserves are made by Gratton & Oldridge from Devon and for a sweet tooth, Raspberry Mud Cakes by Bristol based Crumpet Cakes or award winning brownies from Serious Treats are one step from heaven.

Milsom Place is the ideal venue for this gathering of food and drink enthusiasts with its attractive open courtyards and pedestrian streets connecting Milsom Street and Broad Street. Milsom Place Director Sarah Mansfield said “we are delighted to be hosting the city’s summer food event once again and look forward to welcoming back artisan producers from the West Country”.

Located in the heart of Bath’s prestigious shopping area, Milsom Place is home to successful restaurants like Jamie’s Italian and YO! Sushi with summertime al fresco dining in the courtyards courtesy of Café Parisien and Solo Pizza.

Dr. Hugh Tripp is the owner and winemaker at Avalon Vineyard.  He originally trained in biological research, but then changed direction to pursue the "good life" in the country. His products are unusual and distinctive.  They are hand-produced on a small scale and are only available in their vineyard shop and a few outlets local to them. Their products include organic fruit Wines, Cider which is made in a traditional way along with Mead for which they are the only producers of in the South West.

Park Farm in Kelston is home to an array of award-winning organic cheeses, including the famous Bath Soft Cheese and Wyfe of Bath Cheese. Bridge Farm Cider stall can be found at every big and small event in the south west, from the Dorset Steam Fair to many weekly and monthly farmers markets. Nigel Stewart sources his cider apples from his own orchard at Bridge Farm, East Chinnock, and from orchards near by. He makes traditional sweet, medium and dry ciders and a bottle-fermented sparkling cider and a range of single variety apple juices. Bridge Farm shop also sells a range of cakes, chutneys and jams.

Cotswold Country Liqueurs was established November 2006 as a part time venture by Esther Chapman. Her Parents, Aunties and Grandparents had been making liqueurs from wild fruits for many years.

Esther and her family pick seasonal fruit and flowers by hand from Gloucestershire pasture fields that are far away from the pollutants found near roads and some crop fields, this ensures the fruit is untainted and in its true natural state when blended and infused with the fairly traded sugar and spirit base.

Welsh speaking Gwynfor and Thelma Adams have been farming for over 42 years making them one of the oldest established producers of Welsh Farmhouse Caerffili. They were all absolutely delighted as their latest creation Golden Cenarth picked up the Supreme Champion at the 2010 British cheese Awards along with Best Semi Soft cheese and Best Welsh Cheese. It was a memorable night and completely unexpected.

Batch Farm is situated on the picturesque Pennard ridge with views of the Glastonbury Tor and the Mendips. The Gould's have farmed here for 70 years and the cheesemaking has been a family concern for the last 40. We bring the milk from our 260 Friesian cows about ¾ of a mile to the dairy each day. Alongside the traditional Cheddar we now make Cheddar cheese with added flavourings such as Chilli’s, Garlics and a variety of herbs.

Gratton & Oldridge Preserves started in 1999 with Blackberry and Pear Jelly made from Conference Pears from their own tree and wild blackberries from around the farm.  All of their preserves are made and cooked in the traditional way. Their high fruit jams and jellies are handmade in small batches. Taste of the West Food Awards winners. Silver for their Raspberry Jam in 2005 and for their Caramelized Onions in Red Wine, Lemon Curd and Strawberry & Gooseberry Jam in 2009.

Colin Comben has been at Honey Pot Farm since 2006 & sells his range of seasonal produce at local markets. As well as livestock he has around 5 acres of orchards that he uses to produce Cider, Cider Vinegar as well as Apple Juice & Cordials. Colin also has Bee Hives dotted around which he collects & sells the Honey. He also produces a small range of preserves.

Quoins Organic Vineyardis planted on the southern limits of the Cotswold limestone and is located near to the Saxon town of Bradford-on-Avon. Our own wine is sold as single varieties of Madeleine Angevine, Orion, and Rondo.

Red Rock is a family run 4 barrel brewery based in a renovated barn
in South Devon.  They produce distinctively flavoured real ales
using only spring water, finest malt, whole hops and wet yeast. The brewery was started in 2006 by two teachers who shared an overwhelming interest in beer.
Luckily one of them had a lifelong fascination with home brewing and (more importantly) a son, Lewis, who has had lots of brewing experience!
